Finally, a sneaker convention for the Philippine market! Fellow sneakerhead and businessman Antonio Aguirre, who I went to high school with, joined forces with the Sole Haven Sneaker Community to come up with Sole Slam Manila, a quarterly event where sneaker connoisseurs can buy, sell, and trade hard-to-find footwear.
The first Sole Slam Manila was held in September, which I unfortunately missed because I was on holiday in Singapore. When I was invited to last weekend’s Christmas Sole Slam Manila, I couldn’t say no.
Donning my favorite kicks, a pair of orange hi-cut Onitsuka Tigers, I headed to Ronac Art Center in San Juan, Manila to see the rarest kicks that I would only hear or read about. No longer stuck in the closets or display cases of collectors, the sneakers were given their day in the spotlight. My personal highlight: seeing a couple of 2011 Nike Mags in person.
But the event wasn’t all about Nikes. Streetwear and accessories from other recreational brands and independent labels were up for trade or sale. It’s too bad that the pairs I wanted didn’t come in my size or I would’ve invested four easy digits.
The next Sole Slam Manila is in April or May 2012. Visit their Facebook page for updates.
