Coffee Art Gallery: Part 1

This little project began in 2009 when I purchased a foamy glass of mocha from a café in Melbourne. Although the essence of coffee is in the aroma and taste, the presentation helps make the experience better. Seeing the quaint design on my foam added a heartwarming treat. It’s like getting extra rainbow sprinkles on your sundae or a bigger portion of your usual order at the diner.

After taking a photograph of my mocha’s heart design, I made a mental note of taking a photo every time I’d see art in my coffee.

Not to be confused with the process of using diluted black coffee as a painter’s medium, the coffee art I’m referring to is the barista’s use of foamed milk and other ingredients such as chocolate syrup and sprinkles to create art within the limited diameter of the coffee cup.

Here are some of the best (and worst) that I’ve photographed through the years.

5/8/2011: Latte at Peninsula Hotel Makati, Philippines

7/28/2011: Cappuccino at Figaro, Glorietta 3 Makati, Philippines. I believe the barista was trying to create a bear.

9/6/2011: Latte at Mary Grace Café, Greenbelt 2 Makati, Philippines. The leaf didn’t turn out pretty…

…so I mixed the foam and created my own swirly art.

9/18/2011: Hot Mocha at 40 Hands, Tiong Bahru, Singapore

5/15/2012: Cappuccino at Figaro, Glorietta 3 Makati, Philippines. I asked the barista to make a butterfly. This is what I got.

More to come!
