To kick off my birthday month, I’m spreading the love by helping you find travel freebies you can redeem on your day, week, or month of birth.
1. Free flight
SkyJet, a Philippine-based airline, lets you fly for free to any of their covered destinations on your birthday. Click here for mechanics. As for the other airlines, it’s rare, but it doesn’t hurt to check if they’re currently having a birthday promo.
2. Free cruise
There are many cruises that offer free tickets to birthday celebrants. One is Star Cruises, which gives you not only a free cruise on your birthday month, but also a birthday gift package and free Wi-Fi access (which is expensive for paying guests, believe me!) for the entire cruise. Deadline for reserving this deal is February 15, 2017. If that’s too late for you, try MV Coho and Catalina Express.
3. Free airline upgrades and perks
Most international airlines give free cocktails or even the coveted first class upgrade to passengers celebrating their birthday during the flight. Just ask nicely. Don’t be tempted to fake your birthday, because the proof of date is in your passport.
4. Free food
In Manila, a lot of restaurants treat celebrants to a free meal or buffet access, provided that they bring an official ID showing their birthdate. Click here for a list of birthday-friendly restos. When you’re traveling abroad to first-world countries like the US, you can get free treats like a scoop of Baskin-Robbins ice cream or a complimentary Starbucks drink. Click here for a full list.
5. Free spa treatments
Many spas and resorts actually give birthday freebies and discounts, but they don’t overly advertise it. Some keep it hidden in the fine print of their websites. It doesn’t hurt to call and ask. Here’s one: Members of The Spa get a free one-hour massage on their birth month.
6. Hotel perks and upgrades
Many hotels give extra perks to customers booking a stay during their birthday. Here are some that I found: Taal Vista Hotel gives free spa treatments, 20% discount on food and beverages, and a free birthday cake. Ace Hotel Suites gives free spa treatments to VIP cardholders on their birthday. Most casinos give a free birthday spin or free gambling chips to legally aged celebrants.
7. Free entrance to museums, zoos, and theme parks
If you’re planning to spend your birthday at a museum, zoo, or theme park, make sure you bring a photocopy of your birth certificate and valid ID containing your date of birth. You will most likely get in for free, provided that you bring a full paying guest. Here are some to get you started: Art In Island in Manila, Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna, Singapore Zoo, and Ocean Park Hong Kong. But many major theme parks (like Disneyland) don’t offer birthday promos anymore. It’s best to call their ticketing office or browse the official website to be sure.
