“When you ordered waffles and coffee instead of beer, I knew you were weird,” AO joked when we talked about our first official date in a Makati bar in 2010.
Weird as I was, he loved me. He wholeheartedly accepted my quirks and constant cravings for chocolates, pancakes, and breakfast food.
To mark my first birthday since his passing, I took my family to a spot that temporarily soothed the void that he has left behind.
Like my beloved AO who enjoyed Googling the newest food finds and hole-in-the-wall joints, I came across Early Bird Breakfast Club online and booked a table for four on February 28th.
It was my kind of joint—breakfast all day, any time of the week. With savory and sweet plated meals good for sharing in an intimate artsy setting, this café will make you forget about i-hopping to that nearby pancake restaurant that’s momentarily overflowing with Instagram foodies.
Early Bird Breakfast Club’s ambiance was quaint, and the food, comforting. They even make their own fresh ketchup and syrup from scratch instead of serving you bottled grocery brands.
For your fill of good old Filipino breakfast, get the Adobo Sunrise, P315, fried rice loaded with crispy adobo flakes, or Yin and Yang Champorado, P275, a Belgian chocolate version of the classic chocolate rice porridge with toasted dilis (anchovies).
For a more continental taste, try the Signature Pancakes, P325, Full English Breakfast, P495, and Eggs Benedict, P420.
