Daytime Clubbing in San Francisco

For elder millennials and Gen X, daytime clubbing is the new night out. I’ve been hearing about this concept for a couple of years now. There are afternoon pool parties that serve parents who take turns watching their kids at the pool while getting their cocktails at the bar—with decibel-safe house music playing in the background. There are brunch parties that give you your dose of dancing and tippling as early as 11am. On my recent San Francisco trip, I experienced two versions of daytime clubbing.

First, there was Wonder-Full, a once-a-year tribute party to the music of Stevie Wonder led by DJ Spinna in 620 Jones in San Francisco. From upbeat tracks like “For Once In My Life” and “Don’t You Worry About a Thing” to more mellow jams like “Superstition” and “My Cherie Amour”, the crowd was hooked. We sang out loud, clinked our glasses with kindred spirits, and grooved to the best of Stevie Wonder.

The party wrapped up at 8pm, which was perfect for this aging millennial. I’m done trying to party until sunrise like I used to in my 20s. What a relief to know that I can just have dinner afterward and be home by 10pm for a warm bath before tucking myself in bed. That hardly makes a dent in my sleep patterns and life schedule.

Wonder-Full with my SFO cousins, L-R: Nicole, Dee, Kismet, Me, Criziel, and Sheila. Pardon my Asian flush.

Then there was Weekend Brunch R&B at Sobre Mesa, Oakland. It was everything this ’90s teen loved! It runs every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm, and my SFO-based cousins took me there. We paid an entrance fee and were lucky to get a good table as the place got packed quickly. A DJ played R&B tracks from the ’90s and beyond, which we danced and sang along to. We ordered a hefty meal from the brunch menu and a round of cocktails from the bar.

How could I stop myself from bopping my head and mouthing the lyrics when the DJ played my cassette tape and CD picks from the ’90s, such as Brandy’s “Sitting Up In My Room” and Soul 4 Real’s “Candy Rain”? The playlist smoothly transitioned to 2000s R&B, with the likes of Bow Wow and Ciara’s “Like You”, giving us the ultimate throwback rush.

San Francisco’s daytime clubbing and partying scene is now my standard for going out. Should I organize a similar concept in Manila? I remember bringing this up with ’90s R&B/Soul singer Radha when I met her at a press event in Manila, and she was stoked by the idea.

I can already visualize it: An afternoon party in a small bar in Makati or BGC, where a local DJ spins R&B and hip-hop tracks from the ’90s—a mix of American and Filipino artists. In true Pinoy style, we’ll have a karaoke mic to pass around in case someone wants to belt out a few lines. We might even surprise the millexial crowd with guest performers like Kulay and Sun Valley Crew.

Should I organize this in Manila? What say you?
