Towering Ice Cream in Norm’s Michigan
One of the highlights of my Michigan trip this year is Norm’s Ice Cream, a seasonal local hang out in West Michigan. They have three locations—Grand Haven, North Muskegon, and Fruitport. My new Michigan friends (Hi, Katie and Nate!) took me to the latter.

What’s a digital nomad/modern city girl like me doing all the way in MI, USA, you ask? I visited an auntie and uncle who live there, and it was an immersive experience—a break from my usual fast-paced city life.
Norm’s Ice Cream serves a impressive menu of hard-serve and soft-serve ice cream, sundaes, shakes, slushies, and more. They’re best known for their hard-serve ice cream, which comes in a variety of American flavors, such as deer traxx (peanut butter cups and chocolate), bear hug (caramel and chocolate cashews), and Michigan pot hole (black-tar fudge in chocolate).

As for the sizes, they’re hand-painted to scale on the glass window—baby ($2.45), kids ($3.65), small ($4.50), medium ($6.30), and large ($9). They’re not kidding around when they say large. Made to shock and amaze, the large hard-serve ice cream is a giant cone filled with what looks like at least a dozen hefty scoops of ice cream. They’ll also hand you a plastic tray and spoon in case you don’t eat fast enough (brain freeze, anyone?) and the ice cream tower topples over, which will eventually happen and is part of the fun.

Their ice cream isn’t just your average ice cream. Michigan is known to produce fresh and high quality milk, which I had every morning in my aunt and uncle’s home like a happy toddler, so their ice cream has the same creamy, top-tier quality.
This seasonal shop is open daily from March to October, but closed every winter. I’m glad I caught Norm’s Ice Cream in early fall, right before my flight back to Philippines. Add this to your bucket list if you find yourself in that side of the United States.
