There’s a growing number of Filipino freelancers and remote workers who’ve had enough of their cramped condo space and moved to the beaches or mountains, where they can do exactly what they’ve been doing on their computers in Manila, but this time by the ocean away from the stressors of the city. Read all about it in my blog, #KateWasHere.com. Link in bio. ☀️

Who remembers a drunken night or two in this cliffside spot along #DiniwidBeach? Local kids have turned it into a cliffside diving spot. For safety reasons, cliffside structures are no longer allowed in Boracay. ☀️

Tidbit: I’ve been to #Boracay many times before, Tidbit: I’ve been to #Boracay many times before, but I had never stepped foot on Willy’s Rock because there were always hordes of tourists. I only watched from afar. Well, now I can finally say I had #WillysRock all to myself. March used to be the signal of the summer season, but right now Boracay’s tourist influx is only 5-10% of what it used to be.

Swipe left to see me finally on Willy’s Rock, but swipe right for me. ✌🏻😹 Just kidding, I hate dating apps.

@spotph sent me on a mission to write about the he @spotph sent me on a mission to write about the health protocols and new tourism rules in the #Philippines. I wish this was just one of those annoying Instagram photos where I overuse the hashtags #vitaminsea and #travel, but in reality, this trip has been an eye-opener and a heartache. While the white beach is beautiful as always, my heart broke to see that more than half the establishments in Boracay have closed, are dilapidated, or facing uncertainty. I’m still in #Boracay, talking to locals about how the pandemic has affected their lives. It’s so easy for us privileged folk to scream “Stay at home!” while we make our dalgona coffees and TikTok to our heart’s content, but the tourism industry has left a lot of Filipinos hungry and jobless. One boatman told me that he’d be lucky to earn P30-P100 a day (1-2 USD) in the last year. His family relied on the ayuda (minimal government assistance) and donations from business owners stuck in Boracay.

But that’s not enough. It’s hard to speak about travel these days without getting flack, but how can we sit leisurely in our furnished homes when the less privileged people of the Philippines have been hungry and unemployed for 12 months now? I can’t say I’m extremely pro-travel or anti-travel these days. I’m floating somewhere in the middle, where I #travelresponsibly once in a while for the sake of my #mentalhealth and to support the tourism sector. Every day I am educating myself on social realities and I prefer hearing stories directly from those experiencing it. For scientific developments, I listen to medical professionals.

I can’t wait to finish my articles for #SpotPH and my blogs for #KateWasHere.com. Please stay tuned. I have so much to write.

Photo taken by a coconut vendor. I paid him extra to take my photos. Of course I bought a coconut, too.

P.S. I still wear a mask here and keep my face shield on while eating in restaurants. Boracay follows stricter safety precautions, especially after that recent mishap.
