Hey Philippines, we’re about to hit our first qu Hey Philippines, we’re about to hit our first quarantine anniversary. 😱 Remember when we thought the lockdown would last for only a few weeks? I can only laugh at myself maniacally.

What new hobbies keep you sane? I’ve picked up dozens! I’m grateful for the friends and brands that support my blog by sending me new stuff to try out and use for my editorials with #KateWasHere and @phgirltalk.

L-R from top left:

1. #PressedFlowers. I love picking up wildflowers from my neighborhood whenever I walk my dogs. Here are some from the summer of 2020, which I can’t believe is almost a year ago. 🌺
2. #Seashells from the seashore—some shells I got from my Calatagan (Batangas) glamping trip in December 🐚
3. My trusty #Pylones makeup brush gifted by @thepowderroombeautylounge @thepowderroom.manilabay.
4. My new toy from @imagic.ph, the versatile 12-Flash Color Palette, which you can use as face and body makeup. Time to practice for Halloween 2021, haha! #imagicph 💋
5. My 2021 #NaviPlanner from @crazyaboutpaperstore and @bdjbuzz, which is slowly turning into a scrapbook, haha! 📖
6. #JessicaZafra’s new book, #TheAgeOfUmbrage. My sister @abagofgoodies gave me a ton of books from @_fullybooked, woohoo! 📚
7. My #journal from @bagi_bagz’s cruise ship. I find myself #writing more for myself. It’s not just about the paid articles with a deadline or blog posts with a target audience. I write for the most private and critical audience—myself. 📝
8. I wish I could remember the name of the designer of this seashell ring!
8. Like my #nailart? I used the Liquid Vinyl Lacquer topped with Kick Glass, both from @orlyph. #orlyph #orlykickglassmani 💅🏼
9. I finally found the best dupe for The Ordinary, which is always out of stock in Manila. Check out @modestskincare.ph’s range of cruelty-free serums. Full review coming soon. #modestskincareph

What an honor! @myrzasison was my mentor back when What an honor! @myrzasison was my mentor back when I was an editorial assistant working my way to becoming a fashion and beauty editor. She was the legendary editor-in-chief of @cosmopolitan_philippines and Marie Claire PH. 💄👠👛

Of course, I soon realized that I no longer wanted to be a fashion editor nor stuck in an office cubicle. I took the leap and went #freelance while pursuing my dream of working while #traveling. This was way before the dawn of Instagram and the terms “digital nomad” and “influencer” were a thing. 🗺

I’ll be live in Myrza’s online show, “Ask Ms. Myrz,” tomorrow, Feb. 3, 4:30-5:30pm (PH time, GMT+8), through her accounts:

I get by with a little help from my friends 🎶🎵
When you see a #travel photo on social media, does When you see a #travel photo on social media, does your blood boil and you want to lecture the person about COVID-19?

I was like that, too, until quarantine took a toll on my #mentalhealth. Hear me out. I strictly followed the government’s protocols and did not leave my house from March-July 2020. I’m privileged to survive the economic crisis. I have dogs and cats to keep me company (@crazydogcatlady), a garden, and space for exercise. But just when I thought I was doing a good job surviving the pandemic, my mental health spiraled. I won’t delve into the details of my relapse, but I was diagnosed again with generalized anxiety disorder.

I reached out to the MH community. Turns out I wasn’t alone. To say that there’s a spike in mental health issues during the pandemic is an understatement.

By the last quarter of 2020, I noticed people were finding ways to address quarantine fatigue—by traveling. When I read the articles and IG posts of bloggers I trust, they included lengthy disclaimers. Some went camping in a remote spot away from other humans. Some went to private beach houses for the weekend. Some checked in resorts that follow strict health protocols. Some went hiking or biking away from the city.

I realized you can #travelresponsibly, but with A LOT OF PRECAUTIONS. In my latest blog post, I discussed the question that continues to elicit strong reactions, but rightfully so: “Should you travel these days? What are the acceptable reasons for taking a quick vacation? If you are going to go on that short trip, what conditions you should be amenable to?”

I went social-distance glamping this December, for the sake of my mental health. I followed all the precations, plus other personal safety rules. While we can travel responsibly, I DON’T encourage jet-setting like it’s 2019. We need nature and some semblance of a life for the sake our mental health, but traveling is not something I want to do regularly—for now.

For a deeper discussion, you may read my full blog post. Link in bio.

P.S. I’m a staunch #wearamask supporter. I took it off for a few seconds in this photo while the photog was 8 feet away.
